The Le Sueur Fire Department

What We Do:

The Le Sueur Fire Department is staffed by a group of highly-trained volunteers and available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week by radio communications with the 9-1-1 Dispatch Center at the Le Sueur County Sherrif's Department. Our mission is to save lives and protect property, in that order. We have a system of mutual aid with surrounding towns for additional assistance, when needed, and work closely with the Le Sueur Ambulance Service. We have an enviable record of rapid response times, especially compared to cities without an in-town Fire Department.

The Le Sueur Fire Department was established in 1882. We are owned by the City of Le Sueur and supported with tax dollars by all residents of the service area. Additional funds come from user fees and donations. (Click here to view Funding & Structure)

We serve an area of approximately 100 square miles, with a population of about 2100 households. Included in this area are the City of Le Sueur, all or portions of the Townships of Sharon, Tyrone, Ottawa and Derrynane in Le Sueur County; all or portions of the Townships of Henderson and Kelso in Sibley County; and a portion of Lake Prairie Township in Nicollet County.

Organizationally, the Le Sueur Fire Department is part of the Regional Fire Department, Region 12, which consists of all fire departments in Le Sueur County.  All members of the Region 12 group meet regularly to exchange ideas, methods and information and to receive on-going training.

How We Do it:

Staff & Equipment:
Our Fire Department currently has 24 volunteer members including the Fire Chief. All members are trained equally on everything so everyone is capable and knowledgeable. (Click here to view Training Information)

All members are on call at all times. An average of 18 volunteers respond to each call. Currently, we average 60 calls per year.

Educational Services:
Le Sueur Fire Department Volunteers teach fire prevention to students at the elementary schools during Fire Prevention Month in October. In addition, we have a booth at the annual Farm & Home Show where firefighters are on hand to answer questions and the public can pick up information related to fire prevention.

Other Services & Benefits:
Our Department also performs smoke alarm testing on an annual basis to all area apartment buildings and co-ops. This service helps ensure that the alarms are in working order and increases the safety of all tennants.

The Fire Department also hosts the Annual Firemen's Dance, held the second weekend in June. In addition, we host an annual appreciation pancake breakfast, held the first Sunday in May.

How You Can Help:
We are always looking for volunteers. Both men and women are encouraged to become trained firefighters. The training and commitment are significant, but the reward of knowing you are contributing to the very life and health of the community is extremely rewarding.
